Computerized Structural Design, S.C. (CSD) is a nationally known and respected full service structural engineering consulting firm headquartered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. CSD was incorporated in 1968 to provide structural engineering and building design services. CSD has had steady growth since 1968 and we now employ a staff of more than fifty experienced structural engineers, architects, and AutoCAD technicians. In 1999, CSD opened a branch office in Greenwood Village, Colorado to better serve our clients' needs.

Nearly all of our engineers have earned a Master's Degree in Structural Engineering. It is our policy as a premier structural engineering firm to maintain a staff of the best engineering talent in the industry. We believe in the education of our employees. Currently James Fisher, James LaBelle and Mahmoud Maamouri have earned a doctorate in structural engineering, Michael Kempfert, James Gerloff, and Nestor Escobales are also pursuing their doctorate. Our company was founded by well educated people and we want to keep that tradition alive.

Many of our professional engineers are active on national technical committees to stay at the forefront of structural engineering technology. We believe it is our duty to be involved in the industry. The following are some of the major organizations that we particpate in:

In addition to being active members in the above mentioned technical organizations several CSD engineers lecture throughout the United States, and have authored or have made major contributions to the following books and design guides (and many more):

  • "Foundation Design and Construction", Butler Manufacturing Company
  • "Handbook of Composite Construction Engineering", Van Nostrand
  • "Light and Heavy Industrial Buildings", AISC
  • "Metal Building Systems", Johnson & Hardin Company
  • "Steel Beam-To-Column Building Connections", Elsevier Applied Science
  • "Structural Engineering Handbook", McGraw-Hill
  • "Designing with Steel Joists, Joist Girders, Steel Deck", Nucor Corporation
  • "Constructional Steel Design, An International Guide", Elsevier Applied Science
  • "Industrial Buildings, Roofs to Column Anchorage", AISC
  • "Serviceability Design Considerations for Low-Rise Buildings", AISC
  • "Erection Bracing of Low-Rise Structural Steel Buildings", AISC
  • "A Guide for Designing with Standing Seam Roof Panels", AISI
  • "Hollow Structural Sections Connections Manual", AISC
  • "Building Structural Design Handbook", Wiley-Interscience

Building Design

A primary area of professional service at CSD is the structural design of buildings. Our services include the design of industrial buildings, hospitals, hotels, schools, nursing facilities, and office buildings. The structural design of industrial buildings is a major area of activity. We have designed millions of square feet of industrial facilities including warehouses, manufacturing plants, crane buildings and long span structures such as aircraft hangars. Building types include cold storage facilities, foundries, and a wide variety of manufacturing facilities. CSD has designed numerous major steel mills with large cranes, long spans and complex foundations for both buildings and processes. Our experienced project managers have often been asked to take responsibility for coordination of all consultants in the design process whereby we become the professional in charge of the entire project.

Specialty Engineering

Another major area of emphasis for CSD is specialty engineering, specialty engineering includes:

  • Design and review of precast concrete structures and components. All types of precast concrete building components, including structural precast and architectural precast, are designed by our precast specialists. In addition to the design of precast concrete structures, we also provide erection and production drawings for precast suppliers.
  • Design of rack storage systems, including automated storage rack structures, which support the building enclosure.
  • Design of steel connections for steel fabricators and detailers.
  • Dynamic analysis and design for equipment manufacturers. Design work is performed for pressure vessels, sanitary treatment tanks and sanitary equipment.
  • Curtain wall and skylight design. CSD engineers have designed hundreds of large, complicated skylight and curtain wall structures for owners and manufacturers.
  • Design of complex machine foundations considering both dynamic loads and control of foundation movement. This also includes the design of special building foundations, wall retention systems and underpinning systems.
  • Failure and forensic investigations of structural systems.
  • Product development - Testing of structural components and systems.
  • Computer program development for structural analysis and design.
  • Certified welding inspections and quality certification audits under the AISC Quality Certification Program for the Metal Building industry.

CSD is registered in all states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. We are regularly involved in the design of projects throughout the USA and have also worked on international projects.

Years of practical experience, combined with continuing participation in technical societies and research groups keeps CSD at the forefront of engineering progress, which in turn allows us to provide exceptional practical and innovative engineering service to our clients.
