The rapid growth of the private space industry in recent years has created opportunities for CSD to bring our expert services to the design of unique industrial structures. This particular project involved a 125,000 square foot integration facility with an adjoining 25,000 square foot office and storage facility, for which CSD served as Structural Engineer of Record.
The high bay supports two 250-ton overhead cranes at a rail height of 106 feet and a rail-to-rail crane span of 201 feet, with an overall building height of 130 feet. The end wall includes 90 foot x 190 foot clear openings, requiring significant end wall trusses and a lateral framing system to support the large overhead doors.
Primary structural framing included laced columns supporting plate girder crane runway girders and fabricated steel roof trusses with a span of 213 feet. The large roof trusses were shop-fabricated, with bolted splices to minimize field time. CSD worked through erection concerns in the process of the design of the columns and trusses to eliminate shoring and field connections, and limit temporary bracing.
CSD was integral to the project, working as part of the design-build team from pre-construction through construction. By providing design assistance during pre-construction to work through extensive coordination items with Architectural and MEP design team, CSD’s expertise helped minimize construction time and ensured a successful project in an exciting new industry.
